Vocabulary Log #1

I know I'm a bit left out but hey, I'm trying to keep up here. Life's not a race anyway. Instead, it's a place where you explore and share. What are you chasing after? Death is chasing you anyway hahahah that sounds rather scary but it's reality! you ain't getting younger.

SUNDAY


  • disdain
-The feeling thet sb/stg is not good enough to  deserve your respect or attention
To treat somebody with disdain

  • preen
-To spend a lot of time making yourself looking attractive and constantly praise yourself
Will you stop preening yourself in front of the mirror?
-To clean itself or make its feathers smooth with its beak
Amir watched as the bird preened itself

  • fickle
-Changing often and suddenly
The weather here is notoriously fickle
-Often changing their mind in an unreasonable way so that you cannot rely on them
A fickle friend is the last thing I wanna meet

  • overture
-A piece of music written as an introduction of ballet or opera
Prokofiev's overture to Romeo and Juliet
-An action where somebody tries to make friends, do business or start a relationship with sb else
He began making overtures to a number of merchant banks

  • griefstricken
-feeling extremely sad because stg bad has happened
She was griefstricken ever since his dad passed away and she has not eaten for days.

  • prowler
-A person who stalks sb at night to harm them
She had a feeling that a prowler was around, there were a few cases of robbery lately


MONDAY

-A quality that an idea has that makes you believe it is true.
Historical evidence lends credence to his theory
-Belief in something as true.
Alternative medicine have been getting credence

-Relating to money

-Too move smoothly form one subject to another.
A spiritual that sigued into a singalong chorus

  • titivate
-To improve the appearance of ab/stg by making small changes.
She titivated her hair on the mirror

  • weltschmerz
-A feeling of sadness about the state of the world.
After reading the news, a pang of weltschmerz hit her.

TUESDAY


  • spawn
-To lay eggs
The fish is spawning
-To cause sth to develop or be produced
The band's album spawned a string of hit singles

  • stewed
-Tasting too strong and bitter because it has been left in the pot for too long
Amirah would always end up eating stewed porridge because she was distracted by the television

  • synagogue
-A building where Jews meet for worship and teaching
There is a synagogue located about a mile from the college

  • tetchy
-Bad tempered
No one likes her because she's all tetchy 

  • umbra
-The darkest part of the shadow
Within the umbra, he stood there motionless thinking what he would he want to do in life at that point.
-The area on the earth or the moon which is the darkest during the eclipse
An umbra marks the starting of an eclipse

WEDNESDAY

  • cloche
-A woman's hat, shaped like a bell and mostly worn in the 20's
She noticed the trend of cloches in the 20's when she did a research on fashion history
-A glass or plastic cover placed over young plants to pretect the cold weather
Noticing the upcoming season change, she quickly stocked up cloches for her plantlets

-planned in advanced
The book's ending was rather contrived I might say

  • cyst
-A growth containing liquid that forms in a person's/animal's body and may need to be removed
Cysts come from dogs and they are dormant until it travels into another medium such as human body

  • disconsolate
-Very unhappy and disappointed
For what seemed like a year, he was in a disconsolate state after he got turned down

  • en bloc
-As a group rather than seperately
There are reports that teachers are resigning en bloc

  • feint
-To confuse your opponent by making them think you are going to do one thing when you are doing stg else
One of the strategies that crowned him victory was feinting

THURSDAY

  • fretful
-Behaving in a way portraying unhappiness
From that fretful look, Jo knew stg wasn't right

-Usually stg SE asians call people from a foreign country
With that disguise, someone can actually mistaken him for a gweilo

  • indented
-An edge that has an uneven surface
An indented coastline

  • manna
-According to the Bible, it was food that god gave to 40 people of Israel who were deserted
To the refugees, the food was manna from heaven

  • nimble
-Able to move quickly and easily
You need nimble fingers for that job
